Checking the pulse of Khaatumo’s Health

Dr. Ashahaado performing operation at Buhoodle Hospital

It was quite amazing to see Dr. Ashahaado, a native of Khaatumo State perform a variety of free medical operations in Buuhoodle Hospital (built by Dr. Saleebaan Xagla-toosiye_before he went into Rehab_ as Somaliland’s so called Minister if Rehab) Joining this group was a set of qualified nurses and support staff that are all products of Sool Sanaag and Cayn; Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Dawn of a new age in Khaatumo Country!

A few days ago, a flood of folks from nearby small towns and villages rushed to Buu-hoodle City to get much needed medical attention. While this team’s focus was to support and provide services to those injured in the recent fighting illegally waged by the Hargaisa Administration. It was reported that some of the injured previously transported to Galka’ayo region due to lack of enhanced medical services were referred back to Buhoodle receiving the help they needed. Projects like this one truly illustrate the capacity of Khaatumo members to be self-sufficient in their medical needs. Obviously the SSC region has a long way to go to establish a solid Health services program in the region. However, in order to effectively address the Health needs of Khaatumo, there should be a clear channel of communication between Khaatumo Folks in the diaspora, the newly established Ministry of Health (currently under the portfolio of the Minster of Social Services) and civil society in SS region. The goal being to coordinate goals and objectives of the Ministry of Health. Small clinics and basic Hygiene orientation sessions can be established at a very little cost.

There appears to be plenty of volunteers and resources in the region willing to participate in such a Human services project of orientation and information sharing regarding Health services provision. I spoke to one of my Medical Doctor friend (again a native of Khaatumo State) currently practicing in North America who shared with me that he and many other MD colleagues are willing to travel to the region and provide temporary volunteer services for a set number of weeks; this could include high level medical operations to moderate ones such as Cataract surgeries and more… the task of coordinating such a project is feasible and attainable if we can put our heads together as they say it. if you are a nurse or a Doctor or any other medical practitioner and would like to provide further ideas or feedback to this initiative please let us know at the email below.
